MAY MAY
May May’s Golden Second Chance
(Love, at Last, for a Senior Soul)
I got a message from a previous adopter while she was out of town:
"Help.. neighbor threw this kitty outside. Says he does not want her anymore. I am floored"
That cat was May May—a tiny, scared senior girl, alone and confused on the street. What’s worse, I learned she had already been given away at least once before. Now she was dumped again, left to fend for herself after years indoors. To see an old cat like her, tossed aside over and over, was just heartbreaking.
The moment I brought her inside, May May melted into comfort. She was desperate for affection, curling into my lap, finally safe again. But she was in rough shape—covered in fleas, frail and bony, weighing just 4 pounds. I could feel every bone. That level of malnourishment isn’t just unhealthy—it’s painful.
Thank goodness for the team at Sunshine Veterinary Hospital, who fit us in right away. Bloodwork revealed what we feared: signs of kidney disease, and confirmation that May May is a senior—likely in her late teens. To imagine a cat of that age, after a lifetime of loyalty, being abandoned on the street… it hurts.
But May May is a little fighter.
We’ve started her on subcutaneous fluids, appetite stimulants, and plenty of supportive care to help her kidneys and keep her eating. She’s already putting on weight and showing us she’s not done yet.
Originally, we assumed May May would be a hospice foster—a soft place to land for whatever time she had left. But now? She’s gaining strength and showing us that maybe—just maybe—there’s still a forever home out there for her.
Yes, she’s a senior.
Yes, she needs a little extra care.
But what she gives in return is pure love.
May May lives for lap time, snuggles, and endless treats (her absolute favorite). We don’t know how many good moments she had in her past, but we do know she’s had too many hard ones. That ends now.
She will never be tossed aside again. Never be alone, hungry, or unloved. She is safe, cherished, and part of a team that believes every cat deserves dignity and love—especially the old, forgotten ones.
We can’t change May May’s past, but we can rewrite her future. It’s time she learns what a forever home truly is.
This is why we do it.
