Luca
Luca’s Strength to Survive
The first place I ever began TNVR was at Lucy’s house. I met Lucy one day, and she told me about the colony cats who kept reproducing faster than she could keep up. She was 80 years old, doing her best to feed them, watch over them, and worry for their future. I started trapping there, one cat at a time, simply trying to make things better.
Lucy became more than a caretaker- she became a friend.
Since those first days, more than 100 cats in the neighborhood have been fixed, and many have found their way into loving homes.
After Lucy passed away, her family began cleaning out her home. That’s when they saw him: a sickly cat curled up on the back patio, barely moving. They remembered how I had helped Lucy and reached out right away. Within minutes, I was on my way.
The cat was one I had already TNVR, but he was in terrible shape. Mange had taken over his body. It’s a condition that’s heartbreakingly easy and affordable to prevent and treat, yet left unchecked, it can shut down an animal’s entire system and take their life. By the time I arrived, he was so weak I was able to gently place him into a carrier without a fight.
I named him Luca, after Lucy- the woman who had quietly devoted her days to these cats and whose kindness had brought me there in the first place.
When animals are this sick, it’s always impossible to predict what comes next. Sometimes, once the pain fades, they become incredibly affectionate. Other times, they grow strong enough to protect themselves and keep their distance. Either way, it didn’t matter. Luca deserved comfort, care, and a chance to live.
In just a few short weeks, the change was remarkable. The mange disappeared. His body rehydrated. His eyes grew bright and alert again. Luca made it clear he wasn’t interested in becoming a house cat- and that was okay.
The most important part was that the call came in time.
Once he was healed and strong, Luca was returned to his colony, where he could live safely, comfortably, and healthy among the familiar faces and places he knew as home.
Not every happy ending looks like adoption. Some look like survival, relief from suffering, and a second chance to simply live.
Luca is a living reminder of what this work is about- showing up when it matters most, easing suffering, and making a real difference, one life at a time.
This is why we do it.
